Sang Bum LIM

Umbrellas

Influenced by Rene Magritte, Christo and Jeanne Claude, and John Pfahl, this work has diverse meanings, beyond aesthetic beauty, made from many umbrellas in a specific place. It reveals layers of life through the juxtaposition, amalgamation, and parallel of umbrellas. The background of umbrellas images includes space with marks of my life, such my apartment, schools where I studied photography, and travel sites visited with my acquaintances. I generate narratives by presenting combinations of umbrellas against backgrounds depending on their locations. Through this process I raise the topic 'the privatization of public space'.

Chinese Characters %u7A7A%u9593 originally mean empty place. A place never visited is just an empty space without personal memories or significance. If a space is filled with personal memories, and is lived in, the space can be read differently. I revisit a place I forgot about, arrange black umbrellas as if executing a religious ritual for dead memories and spaces, and record them photographically. This work commemorates dead times and my memories.

Artist Lee, Gum Ja was born in Daegu in 1945. She graduated with a degree in Applied Fine Arts from Daegu Yeungnam University. From 2006 onwards, she moved on to painting. She is currently a member of the Korea Professional Artists Association and works mainly in Daegu.

Heaven%u2019s Will
Korea is a nation that has obeyed the God%u2019s sovereignty and the laws of nature.
I was grown in the land of the morning calm in the orient, and have loved calligraphy for a long time with grinding an ink stick and grabbing a brush.
On Korean paper made out of ninety nine touch of an artisan my brush dances.
When the dance of my long and thin brush ends
Korean paper that has a life of endurance is reborn as a splendid piece of work.
Different from a turbulent history of Korea,
Like a chaste maiden the calligraphy could preserve its purity and essence.

I do believe that the beginning of the 21st century is the very time to spread out the Korean calligraphy toward the world.
My works are made of Korea%u2019s traditional material not only having Korean and oriental mentality and emotion but also demonstrating the ancient times, the common denominator of people in the world.

My works describe the life of human being who are %u2018fruitful and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it%u201D

KIM Hyo-Ea (nom artiste; H.-E. Christina KIM),
Artiste Peintre coréenne vivant et travaillant à Daegu en Corée du sud.
Baccalauréat en Beaux-Arts et Maîtrise en beaux-arts en Corée
Doctorat en histoire de l'art, de l'Université de Paris X à Paris.
A participé à de nombreuses expositions, surtout aux foires internationales d'art contemporain (St'art, Miai, Artenim, Art DC, Art Shanghai...) en plus de trente expositions personnelles. Elle est la directrice de Galerie Athena-Paris et la présidente de l%u2019association A R TO IN.

Le thème principal et le but de son travail est la joie:
Son but ultime est de retrouver le paradis perdu, parce qu'il y a "la vie éternelle" - la vérité, la bonté, la beauté - dans ce paradis. Donc, son travail se doit d%u2019être, avant tout, beau et d%u2019apporter de l'espoir et d%u2019être empreint de cette énergie primordiale du premier matin du Monde.
Devant son travail, le visiteur partage ce sentiment immense de joie et de bonheur.
